Injury First Steps Request a call

What to do after a car accident starts with safety.

Safety and a medical check come first. Injury First Steps and a personal injury lawyer who serves your area may call about the report, the insurer, and the clock.

  1. Hour 0 Get people safe and get checked.
  2. The call comes from a private lawyer, not the police.

Request a call

Tell us where to reach you. A personal injury lawyer who serves your area may call about what to do after a car accident.

Injury First Steps is an independent guide, not a court. The call does not hire a lawyer or start a case.

Where our facts come from

Checked against California DMV and California Insurance Commissioner guidance on October 27, 2026.

How it works

You send five fields. A personal injury lawyer who serves your area may call about what to do after a car accident. Hiring anyone is still your decision.

  1. Send the form

Your name, phone, email, state, and city go to one or more personal injury lawyers that serve your area. They do not go to the police or your insurer.

  2. A lawyer may call

Expect the date and place, the report number if you have it, and whether an insurer already asked for a statement. The call does not start a lawsuit.

  3. You choose

If you hire that lawyer, the fee agreement has to be in a writing you sign. If you do not, you can tell them to stop.

What it is, and what it is not

The pages follow official crash-report, insurance, and filing-deadline pages. Injury First Steps is not a court, a police department, or a law firm. The form does not start a case, and it does not promise a settlement.

How a call gets matched

You send your name, phone, email, state, and city. Injury First Steps and personal injury lawyers near you may call and text. You can tell them no. The call does not hire anyone.

When the first calls start coming in

Safety and medical care come first. Then photos, names, and your own insurer. The other driver's company is a separate call, and it is not your lawyer.

A row of empty chairs along a quiet hospital corridor.
  • Someone asked for a recorded statement

Your own insurer may take a written or recorded statement. California's insurance department also says not to sign statements about fault or promises to pay, and to notify your company immediately.

  • The crash needs a report and a clock

California asks for an SR-1 within 10 days when anyone is injured or property damage is over $1,000. Many California and Texas injury suits use two years. New York generally uses three. A contingency fee has to be in a signed writing.

Who you call after a car accident

The people on the phone do different jobs. Mix them up and you can give a fact to the wrong one.

Your insurer

What they do
Takes the claim on your policy. California tells you to notify your agent or company immediately.
What they need
The date, place, other drivers, and photos. It may take a written or recorded statement.
Worth knowing
Read the policy. Cooperation clauses sit there, not on this site.
Talking to insurers

The other insurer

What they do
Looks after the other driver. It may call you for a statement or a recorded interview.
What they need
The driver, vehicle, and insurance details you already exchanged.
Worth knowing
It is not your lawyer. Keep the rest of the story for the police and your own company.
The other driver's call

A lawyer

What they do
Can explain the deadline, fault, and whether a claim or a lawsuit is the next step.
What they need
The report number, photos, medical visits, and the state where the crash happened.
Worth knowing
A contingency fee, when it is used, has to be in a writing you sign.
How to choose a lawyer

Have two facts ready when they call

You can send the form without either of these. They make the first conversation shorter.

  • The date, time, and street or highway where the crash happened
  • Whether an insurer already asked for a recorded statement
An insurance policy, a laptop, and office supplies spread on a desk.

Questions people ask before they send the form

Request a call
Is Injury First Steps part of the police or a court?

No. This is an independent guide. The person who calls you is a private lawyer, not the police, a court, or an insurance department.

Does it cost anything to ask for a call?

Sending the form does not hire anyone. A lawyer's fee for a case is a separate agreement you would make later, if you hire them.

Can a lawyer promise I will be paid?

No one can promise that. A court or an insurer decides a claim. Walk away from anyone who says a settlement is certain.

What happens after I send the form?

A partner personal injury lawyer may call or text the number you entered. You can tell them to stop. The form never asks for a Social Security number.

Ask about the first hours

You decide what happens after the call. The form does not hire a lawyer.
